Message Body:
Hi Sir,

I am preparing for ASOC exam. I am from Kerala, so I will not be able to attend the classes hosted by SIARS in Chennai. I would like to know answers to the following sample questions that I downloaded from internet. SIARS seems to be the only active website that promptly replies to queries, that is why I asked my queries here. Could you please help me?

Thanks,

Queries

1.The calling Amateur’s call sign in ‘VU2DX DE VU2DJ’ ?

I believe the answer is VU2DJ, Just need a confirmation.
Correct

2. The standard shift between transmitting and receiving frequency for Amateur Radio in VHF band is ?

Is the answer 600KHz, just need a confirmation
Correct

3. What is the recommended way to break into a conversation when using phone?
a) Say “QRZ” several times followed by your call sign
b) Say your call sign during a break between transmissions from the other stations
c) Say “Break” “Break” “Break” and wait for a response
d) Say “CQ” followed by the call sign of either station
The study material I have been following tells that we have to mention ‘Break’ only once followed by the call sign, but the options in the answer says that we have to speak ‘Break’ three times

Break is used in emergencies only! In phone you should give your callsign between overs.

4. Which of the following 20 meter band segments is most often used for most data transmissions?

a) 14.000 – 14.050 MHz
b) 14.070 – 14.100 MHz
c) 14.150 – 14.225 MHz
d) 14.275 – 14.350 MHz
Which document I have to use to study answer to this kind of questions?

India does not have specific mode allocations for bands, unlike USA bandplans. This is more of a trivia question, but i wouldnt be surprised if this came as question in the exam. According to IARU bandplan, digimodes start from 14.070 and go up. So answer would be B.

5. What is considered to be proper repeater operating practice?
a) Monitor before transmitting and keep transmissions short
b) Identify legally
c) Use the minimum amount of transmitter power necessary
d) All of these answers are correct
I believe the answer is option d, ‘All of these answers are correct’, but the document I refer to says that the answer is option b, ‘Identify legally’. Which one is correct?

There are no references regarding this in the syllabus. However, for the sake of learning, the answer is D.

6. Indian amateurs can communicate with other amateurs in

a) All countries
b) Countries permitted by ITU
c) Countries permitted by Indian Government
d) Countries permitted by Indian Amateur society
I believe the answer is Option b,’ Countries permitted by ITU’, but the document I refer to says that the answer is option a, ‘All countries’. Which is correct ?

Technically its ‘a’. ie, all countries. Radio communications may be exchanged with other stations similarly authorized. The amateur stations are forbidden to communicate with amateur stations of countries whose administrations have notified the International Telecommunication Union of their objection to such radio communications. There are no countries on the list. Although North Korea and Yemen do not have amateur radio licensing, they have been known to allow DXepditions ( foreign operators) to operate from there in the past.

7. The standard emission designation consists of

a) 8 letters/numerals
b) 3 letters/numerals
c) 6 letters/numerals
d) 2 letters/numerals
I know emission designation contains 3 letters/numerals but I would like to get a confirmation since bandwidth also is mentioned along with the Emission

Standard designation is “BBBB 12345” with 4&5 being optional. The answer for this question, however would be c.3 letters/numerals as that seems to be the notation used by the  WPC.

8. The abbreviation for ‘stand by’ in Morse code is

a) SY
b) AS
c) SB
d) AD
Is the abbreviation for ‘Please wait’ (AS) and ‘Stand by’ the same?

In CW, AS is the prosign for Standby

9. The renewal fee for General Grade Amateur license under new rules is

a) Rs 1000
b) Rs 2000
c) Rs. 100
d) Rs.200
Options both A and B can be the answer, can’t they? Depending upon whether the renewal is for 20 years or life time respectively.

Trivia. Go for 2000. These kind of questions are rare.

10. The Call sign blocks allotted to india are

a)ATA-AWZ
b)VTA-VWZ
c)8TA-8WZ
d) a & b
e) a, b & c
The call sign block allocated to India are ATA-AWZ , VTA-VWZ and 8TA-8YZ. Since 8TA-8WZ comes under 8TA-8YZ, Can the answer be option e)a,b &c

Correct

11. What will be the speed in wpm. when a message being transmitted contains 60 characters in a minute ?

Is the answer 12 WPM?( Assuming a word contains 5 characters)

Correct
